The husband and I had a fantastic weekend, largely because most of it was spent a) outdoors and b) with a beer in hand.
We live about a five minute drive from the Peak District, so on Friday evening we took full advantage and drove out to an edge with my mum. It was the first day of the Chatsworth country fair, so there were loads of hot air balloons just setting off. We counted 26! Can you see them?
Follow this with a pint in a country pub and you’ve got the perfect start to your weekend.
On the Saturday we decided to try out a farmer’s market in the small village of Hathersage but in all honesty it was a bit of a let down. There were only about 3 suppliers there! We made a quick exit and instead decided to go to Eyam, as we’d seen the Eyam festival and parade advertised on or travels. And what a great decision it turned out to be!
Eyam is a fascinating village because of its history with the plague. The plague first came to the village in 1665, via some flea infested clothe that was delivered to the village, so far, so unremarkable. However, in order to stop the plague spreading the villagers took the selfless decision to isolate themselves from the rest of the world. There are plaques all around the village which detail how many people died in each house, it’s truly shocking. One poor woman buried her whole family including her husband and six sons within 8 days of each other. The fear they must have felt is unimaginable. It’s really worth a visit if you’re ever in the area.
Luckily, our day in Eyam was a lot more enjoyable and we enjoyed watching all the floats as we sipped a local brew.
And finally, as the title of this post suggests, there was a hog roast! (If you’re squeamish, look away now)
I’ve never witnessed a hog roast first hand, so we of course had to share a pork bap. Yum-my. The meat was so tender, although the stuffing was a bit underdone.
If only all weekends could be like this.
